What Is Wegovy® Medication For Weight Loss?

Wegovy® is a medication that is available by prescription and was approved by the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 2021 to help adults suffering from obesity and its related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and more with weight management.

The active ingredient in Wegovy is Semaglutide, which is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Semaglutide is also the active ingredient in Ozempic, which has been used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes since 2017. The only significant difference between the two medications is that when used for weight management, the dosing concentration is higher.

The inactive ingredients in Wegovy® include sodium phosphate dibasic dihydrate, sodium chloride, and water.

How Does Wegovy® Promote Weight Loss?

GLP-1 is a hormone naturally created by our body to help regulate blood sugar levels by initiating the release of insulin from the pancreas. Semiglutite (Wegovy®) works in the same way by mimicking our own natural GLP-1 hormone and working with the digestive system to not only control insulin levels but also delay the process of digestion, keeping the stomach full for a longer period of time.

Wegovy® promotes metabolic efficiency and helps patients with appetite control. When used under the supervision of a qualified doctor and in conjunction with key lifestyle changes, which include a healthy low-calorie diet and daily exercise, Wegovy® has demonstrated significant, sustainable weight loss results.

How Do You Use Wegovy®?

Wegovy® is administered through once-a-week subcutaneous injections and works best when taken on a similar weekly schedule. Most patients use the pre-filled injector pen in a "fatty area" of their upper arm, abdomen, or thigh and rotate the injection sites to avoid localized irritation. Wegovy® injections should never be administered into a muscle or vein.

Who Is A Candidate For Wegovy®?

Wegovy® is intended for use by adults who are at least 18 years of age and have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. In some cases, patients with lower BMI levels of approximately 27 or higher will qualify if they exhibit coexisting conditions such as diabetes type 2, sleep apnea, etc.

Wegovy® May Not Be The Best Choice For You If:

  • You are currently using any other form of GLP-1 medication,
  • You or a family member have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
  • You currently suffer from the rare genetic disorder MEN2.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Wegovy®.
  • You are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or attempting to get pregnant.
  • You have medical conditions related to your kidneys or pancreas.

What Benefits Does Wegovy® Offer For Weight Management?

  • Helps keep patients from experiencing hunger pangs, helping them avoid excess calorie intake.
  • Decreases the speed of digestion, so food stays in the stomach longer, which helps patients feel full for an extended period of time.
  • Helps regulate insulin levels to minimize the volume of fat that is stored by the body and instead encourages the body to process and burn fat for energy.
  • Wegovy can help promote significant weight loss, which research has proven to significantly improve weight-related health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes type 2, and cholesterol levels.

Wegovy® Dosing

Ensuring that you are administering the correct amount of Wegovy® medication is made simple with a pre-filled, single-use injector pen. Each month, the patient will receive a set of four single-use injection pens that are prefilled with the correct dosage.

Wegovy® doses begin at.25 mg and work up to 2.4mg gradually over time. The strength of each dose escalates each month until the patient reaches the maximum at five months, where they will remain for the duration of their program. The gradual dosing schedule is done to give the body time to adjust to the medication and to mitigate the severity of the normal side effects of nausea and vomiting.
